AN IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL STUDY OF LANGERHANS CELLS IN ORAL LEUKOPLAKIA

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Langerhans cells in oral leukoplakia, using S-100 protein antibody.
17 cases of oral leukoplakia were retrieved from the Department of Oral Pathology, College of Dentistry, Kyung Flee University and Seoul National University.
They were immunolustochemically processed with modified Avidin-Biotin Complex methods and examined with light microscopy.
The obtained results are as follows;
1. In the epithelium of normal oral mucosa, Langerhans cells with positive stained nucleus and cell body are observed. The mean number of LC is 1.3/x400.
2. In oral leukoplakia, Langerhans cells have some dendritic processes with darker stained cell body and nucleus. The number of Langerhans cells is increased comparing with that of normal oral mucosa. (mean number: 3.8/x400)
3. Langerhans cells are most frequently found in the suprabasal area of epidermis and also observed in the supraspinous area and underlying connective tissue of oral leukoplakia.
4 The number of Langerhans cells is increased in hyperkeratosis or acanthosis of oral leukoplakia and most increased in.hyperkeratosis with acanthosis.
